Al Vyverberg
Head Coach
Named the New York State Hockey Coach of the Year for the 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons,
Al Vyverberg is commencing his
20th season as the Knights head coach. Under his direction, the Knights have amassed a record of
259 wins, 157 losses and 29 ties as well as three of their five sectional titles and a New York State
Class A Championship.
Following outstanding playing careers at Pittsford High School and RIT, Al joined the
coaching ranks as an Assistant Coach with the RIT Tigers. In addition, to his stint as a college coach,
Al has also coached Midgets, Junior B and girls Bantams.
Coach Vyverberg continues to play both organized hockey and the highly regarded Friday morning invitational
pickup game at the Skating Institute of Rochester (SIR). He also coaches the Monroe County Hockey AAA Midget Major travel team in the Fall.
Al does not have a particular favorite pro hockey team, he just loves great hockey games. His favorite college team
is the Boston College Golden Eagles. His favorite pro hockey player is former McQuaid Knight Marty Reasoner.
His favorite book is Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood" and his favorite movie, "Forest Gump." Al's favorite food is
anything BBQ'd. When
not working at SIR, Al enjoys music, water sports, boating, biking, roller blading and dancing.He ranks
his daughters Lea and Brett as his two greatest accomplishments and wants everyone to know how wonderful they are. |
Scott Stiffler
Assistant Coach
Scott Stiffler has been an Assistant Coach for the Knights since the 1998-99
season. His other coaching assignments included the 1996-97 season with
the Monroe County Youth Hockey Pee Wee Major Team and three seasons with the SIR Midget Selects. This fall he assisted Al Vyverberg with the Monroe County Hockey AAA Midget Major travel team.
Stiffy has been playing hockey for the past 25 years.
His playing career included
three seasons with the Greece Lightning ('89 - '92), two seasons with the
Rochester Monarchs Junior B Team ('92 -'94) and two seasons at Hudson Valley
Community College ('94 -'96), where his favorite course was lunch. He is currently playing for the SIR Storm
of the Thursday "A" league at Genesee Valley, Locker Room Sports of the Rochester Amatuer Hockey League and on many pickup teams. Given the opportunity, he would love to be a pro BMX Vert champion
Coach Stiffler rates Simon Gagne, Rod Brind'Amour and Mark Howe as his
favorite players and picks the Philadelphia Flyers and the Big Red of Cornell as his
favorite teams.
The Phish documentary "Bittersweet Motel", "Fletch" and "Old School" are Stiffy's favorite films. Lobster and pasta are his
favorite foods. His favorite book is "The Red Dragon" by Thomas Harris.
Off ice, now that Phish has retired, he enjoys many other bands including Moe.
He does enjoy playing NHL '07 and Guitar Hero on his PS2. He loves spending time with his two year old yellow
Lab Cameron, and most importantly, his wife, Jenn.

Mel Castro
Assistant Coach
Mel Castro has been an Assistant Coach for the Knights for six of the past seven seasons, although his connection to the
Knights began during the 1996-97 season, when his son Mike first made the team.
He has also been a goalie coach with several Rochester Youth Hockey teams in the past.
He grew up in New York City and came to Rochester to study at RIT.
Following three seasons with the RIT Tigers, he has played in a number of men's leagues and on various
tournament teams in the Rochester area. For the past 22 years he has been the net minder for the Locker Room Sports
Team of the Rochester Amateur Hockey League.
Coach Castro's favorite hockey players are both goalies: Eddie Giacomin of the New York Rangers and
Bill Sauer of the University of Michigan Wolverines. His favorite teams are the New York Rangers and the RIT Tigers.
His favorite meal is paella. His favorite book is "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee. Mel's favorite movie is
"The Wizard of Oz."
When not thinking about hockey Mel works in the Rochester City Court. Off hours, he enjoys computer
programming, cycling, watching movies with his wife Sara and spending time with his children, Mike, Maria and Peter.

Mason Baziw
Assistant Coach
Mason is in his third season as an Assistant Coach. Mason was a skating manager for one season with the Knights, played two
varsity seasons for McQuaid Jesuit as a defenseman and captained the 2003-04 team.
He has been playing hockey for 13 years and is currently
playing in the "A" League at Genesee Valley for the SIR Storm. The Montreal Canadians are Mason's favorite pro team,
while the University of Maine Black Bears amd the RIT Tigers are his favorite college teams. His favorite hockey players
are future Hall of Famer Patrick Roy and Dany Heatley.
Coach Baziw is a junior at Rochester Institute of Technology. He majors in Envoirnmental Management with a minor in Criminal Justice. His favorite courses are in the areas of field biology, occupational safety and juvenile justice.
Mason's loves Chinese food.
During the off season, Mason play's rugby at RIT and is a collegiate all star in that sport. He also enjoys the outdoors, whitewater rafting and watching bull riding. His favorite books are "Band of Brothers" and "Beyond Band of Brothers," while his favorite movie is "Band of Brothers". He looks forward to graduating and serving in the United States Coast Guard.
