McQ Over Clinton 2-1

With goals by Sean Knightly and Woody Hudson, the McQuaid Knights took first place at the Clinton Courier Holiday Tournament with a 2-1 win over the Clinton Warriors.

The early minutes of the game was a see-saw battle in which both teams alternated attacks in their respective offensive zones, with the edge going to the Warriors in terms of time of possession. At 6:16, senior forward Danny Caufield was called for interference. The Knights' aggressive penalty kill kept the Warriors at bay. At 7:43, captain Corey Flanigan lifted a long high pass from his defensive zone to junior forward Sean Knightly, who was waiting at the Warrior blue line. The Knightly took the puck as it rebounded off a Warrior defenseman and went in on goalie Alec Yutzler and beat him high on the blocker side. Clinton answered by stepping up their attack on senior goalie Ian Harris who deftly put aside eight shots in the period.

The second period started with the Warriors putting the Knights back on their heels. Despite several excellent chances, Harris was steadfast and held Clinton scoreless. But, at 7:47, Chris Snyder took a pass at the hash marks and wheeled to the top of the glove side circle shooting high to Harris' blocker side and beating him. The goal was Snyder's fifth of the tournament.

The play continued to be mostly in the Knights' end for the balance of the period. The white line, consisting of juniors Pat Gerrie, and James Sturnick and sophomore Alex Pautler nearly scored following some good stick work in the corner and quick cycling left Sturnick wide open in front of the Warrior net. As the period drew to a close, sophomore forward Woody Hudson took an Adam Reask pass pass going around the Warrior defender and then cruising in on the Clinton goalie, beating him to the blocker side. Mitch Bailey also assisted on the play.

The third period opened with an interference call against Sean Knightly in the Knights' end. The Warriors put on a sustained attack, but were unable to score. A key blocked shot by Captain Blake Sanderson pushed the puck into the neutral zone and prevented a Warrior scoring opportunity.

At 11:07, Danny Caufield, an apparent favorite with the referees was called for his third penalty of the game, this for roughing. The Knights killed off a minute of the penalty when, sophomore defenseman Kelly Sloan was called for a slashing penalty in the Knights' corner. The Knights handled the two man down situation in excellent fashion, with Harris coming up with several key saves and preventing any score.

Trying to force the game into overtime, the Warriors continued their all out attack, including pulling their goalie with a minute left in the period. Alex Pautler blocked a slap shot from the point to help keep the Warriors off the scoreboard.

Warrior goalie Alec Yutzler finished the game with 19 saves, while Knights' goalie Ian Harris stopped 31. Defenseman Mitch Bailey, forward Nick Caton and goalie Ian Harris were all named to the all tournament team, with Woody Hudson named the tournament's most valuable player.
