The McQuaid Jesuit Knights fell to the Shenendehowa Plainsmen 3-2 in overtime at Genesee Valley Rink on November 30. The early moments of the game found the Plainsmen peppering Knights' goalie Ian Harris with a number of difficult shots which Harris turned aside.
The Knights tallied the first goal at 14:39 of the first period, when senior forward Bill Napoli took a Corey Flanigan rebound to beat Shen goalie Peter Rakowsky to his blocker side.
The second period was a repeat of the first, as the Plainsmen continued to take quality scoring attempts at Harris, but the Knights' net minder was more than up to the task. At 7:27 of the second stanza, Knights' defenseman Joe Dugan was called for tripping. The Plainman quickly scored on their power play on a tipped shot by forward Adam Hitchko that just eluded Harris.
Third period started with the Knights going a man down at the thirteen second mark, when senior forward Nick Caton was called for elbowing. Just 33 seconds into the ensuing penalty kill Knights' senior defenseman Mitch Bailey was called for roughing. The Knights masterfully killed off the first penalty and were on their way to doing so for the second when a Knights defenseman misplayed a puck in front of his goal, which Plainsman Adam Hitchko snapped into the net for his second goal at 2:07.
The Knights rallied by increasing pressure on the Shen defense. Forwards Blake and Brent Sanderson both had quality chances to score but did not finish. Finally at 9:02, junior Brent Sanderson picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone and scored on the breakaway by beating Rakowsky with an upper corner glove side shot.
The balance of the third period saw both get scoring opportunities, but the defense held. In the overtime, the Plainsman aggressively kept the play in the Knight's end. At 1:46 Shen's Adam Hitchko completed his hat trick when he repeatedly picked up his rebounds in the low slot to eventually put one past Harris low on the blocker side.
