Knights Battle to Draw
The Knights and the Auburn Maroons fought to a 2 - 2 tie at Casey Park Rink in Auburn on December 14. An injury during warm-ups sidelined senior goalie Ben Krenzer who had the nod to start the game. Senior Ian Harris answered the call and played three strong periods, stopping 24 of 26 shots.
The first period found McQuaid effectively bottling up Auburn for long stretches. Just minutes into the game Junior Pat Gerrie broke in on a break away attempt, but was stopped with a glove save by the Auburn net minder. Although the Knights slightly outshot, neither side managed a score.
The second period started with a much more energetic Maroon team that repeatedly canceled the Knights' breakout. A flurry of activity in the Knights' end led to a weak side goal from a rebound given up by Harris at 6:02. The Knights developed a more sustained attack midway through the period, but were unable to cash in. On one notable play, sophomore forward Woody Hudson walked several Maroon defenders, only to be stopped when the Auburn goalie snagged Hudson's snap shot from the high slot, which was ticket for the upper corner.
The third period opened with an early penalty tot the Maroons. The Knights' ensuing power play only needed seconds to operate, when senior forward Nick Caton ripped a shot that was partially blocked, but trickled into the net at 14:12. Junior Brent Sanderson and senior Mitch Bailey assisted.
Minutes later, the Maroon power play was given a chance to pull ahead, but were thwarted when Captain Blake Sanderson took a pass from brother Brent and scored over the Maroon goalie's glove hand, at 9:14. Bailey earned another assist on the shorthanded goal.
The plucky Maroons were unfazed by the goal and immediately went to work on the Knights' defense. At 11:06, Auburn scored on a walkout from behind the net that just beat Harris low on the glove side. Despite strong play by both teams during the rest of the period and the overtime, neither side scored. McQuaid outshot Auburn 29-26.
