Ithaca Drops Knights
The McQuaid Jesuit Knights were unable to fend off the 2006-07 state champion Ithaca Little Red on Saturday, December 15, falling to the 2 -1 at Genesee Valley Rink.
Early in the first period, both teams traded power plays, which neither capitalized on.
Then at 8:10, Ithaca's Gable French received a high stick penalty. The Knights' gold line power play of Sean Knightly, Woody Hudson and Adam Reask went to work quickly and scored in just 11 seconds, when Adam Reask beat Ithaca goalie Zach Wilder through the five hole. Reask's line mates both received assists.
The second period started with the Knights killing off a Nick Caton penalty for interference, which straddled the first intermission. Shortly after, the Little Red missed an opportunity on a two on one rush, when Ithaca's Tyler St. Denis shot low to Knights' goalie Ben Krenzer glove side which was smoothly picked off. Although ahead on shots, the Little Red were unable to convert any until 6:49, when a Gabe Mendola shot trickled past Krenzer, who was screened on the shot.
With the score tied, the third period saw a lot of up and down action. At 3:23, senior defenseman Mitch Bailey was called for tripping. The Knights effectively thwarted the Little Red power play until, with just sixteen seconds left on the kill, Ithaca's Jimmy Carrol wheeled out of Krenzer's blocker side corner and from just above the face off circle to beat the McQuaid goaltender on the hear side upper corner.
Not willing to go down without a fight, the Knights mounted a vigorous attack on the Little Red goal, but with no success. In the midst of all the pressure, the Knights gave up a clean breakaway chance. But Senior Ben Krenzer made a great glove hand save of the shot which was ticketed for the upper corner. Despite the last minute heroics, the Knights were unable to score and suffered their sixth loss of the season.
Ithaca goalie Zach Wilder made 17 saves, while the Knights' Ben Krenzer stopped 25 shots.
