Knights Win!!
The McQuaid Jesuit Knights ended their season long scoring drought in fine fashion on December 21, in beating the Guilderland Dutchmen 7-2 in first round action at the Clinton Courier Holiday Tournament in Clinton, New York.
The Knights started the game quickly by pinning the Dutchman in their end of the ice for long stretches. Early in the period, when junior forward Brent Sanderson's rang a shot off the post, clearly beating Dutchmen goaltender Brendan Glennon, many Knights' fans in that stand started believing that the six game scoring jinx would continue. Those fears were compounded at 6:13, when Guilderland's Greg Warnken fed a streaking Dan Dickenson on a two on one break, who beat Knights' goalie Ben Krenzer over the left glove hand.
Despite that setback, the Knights continued their shooting tirade. At 9:35, Guilderland finally succumbed to the effort, when senior forward Nick Caton rifled a shot from the stick side face off circle to beat Glennon though the five hole. At the eleven minute mark, sophomore Woody Hudson buried his shot on assists from Adam Reask and Sean Knightly. Forty seconds later junior Pat Gerrie one-timed a goal mouth pass from Alex Pautler to beat Warnken high over the glove side. Captain Blake Sanderson rounded out the first period scoring, when he deflected a pass from brother Brent at 14:56. Nick Caton also received an assist.
The second period breathed new life into the Dutchmen, when Jon Fogel beat Krenzer on a deflected shot, at 1:38. Guilderland attempted a frenzied comeback getting several scoring opportunities, which Ben Krenzer put away, including one goal mouth tip, which the Knights' goalie blocked with a pretty half-butterfly slide to his glove side.
The Knights recovered their poise by mid period, when Nick Caton took a pass from Brent Sanderson to rip another five hole beauty past Brendan Glennon from the slot. Blake Sanderson also assisted. At 14:49, Woody Hudson tallied his second goal of the night on a feed from senior defenseman Mitch Bailey.
The third period started with both teams substituting goalies. The Knights called on junior Brian Johnson to wrap up the game for them. He was tested early on a series of shots right at the goal mouth, all of which he smothered. Johnson also made two clearing passes to break up other scoring attempts by Guilderland. Remaining on the offensive, the Knights continued to create quality scoring opportunities, but all were thwarted by the Dutchmen's substitute goalie until 13:26 of the period, when Adam Reask took a pass from Woody Hudson to beat the goalie glove side. Sean Knightly was also credited with the second assist.
The Knights goalie tandem made fourteen saves on sixteen shots, while the Guilderland net minders made 41 saves.
